Raw Diet for Weight Loss, Kashi Videos, and New Candy Bar Labels

I apologize for the delay of today's feature post...the parents have left, so I had lots of work to catch up on! Gotta love Sunday evenings, right?

Anyway, I have loads of good articles and websites to share with you tonight. As always, I invite you to read and comment on these links, or share your own recent reads.

Raw Diet for Weight Loss
I have always been intrigued by raw diets and raw cookbooks; you'd be amazed at some of the scrumptious raw desserts you can make. While I don't think I would ever go 100% raw permanently, it might be an interesting mode of eating to experiment with. This article discusses the weight loss benefits one woman has enjoyed thanks to her raw eating habits. What do you think? Have you ever tried a raw diet? Do you have a favorite raw recipe or cookbook?

Harvard Removes Calorie Information

Harvard University recently ended their practice of providing nutrition information for meals served on campus for fear of encouraging eating disorders. While some might be disappointed in such a development, I applaud the university for taking action against eating disorders, which run rampant among institutions of higher learning. What's your take on this change of policy?

Kashi Videos
On a lighter note, I discovered these quick "Eating Well" videos on Kashi's website. The nutritional advice they provide is pretty simple, but I think it's a great idea to provide more health resources for the Kashi community.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Herbs and Spices
As a loyal fan to Rachael Ray, I regularly visit her website and subscribe to the newsletter. The newsletter recently featured a link to this Herbs and Spices Guide. So handy, especially for foodies like me:)

The Truth about Candy Bars
Mars, the famous candy bar producer, recently announced that it will introduce a new labeling system for their products, enabling consumers to more easily understand the truth about what they're eating. A bit of an unexpected tactic from a candy bar company, but I appreciate their efforts to make sweets addicts everywhere more aware of their treats' nutritional values.

That's all for now...be back tomorrow for a full report of the weekend's eats!

Recent Reads

Happy Sunday, everyone! I have a busy day ahead of me, so today's feature will just be highlighting a few articles that I have found interesting in recent weeks. Read, comment, enjoy!

Eating for Pleasure...the Key to Health?
This article from the New York Times sheds new light on successful weight loss/weight maintenance, and I agree with many of its assertions. Perhaps I am biased as a devoted foodie, but I truly believe that fueling your body is something to be savored, not a tedious chore dictated by fad diets.

More Variety for Vegetarians in College
I stumbled upon this article from Vanderbilt's newspaper via Google Alerts. I found it especially pertinent to my life due to its discussion of vegetarianism in college. It's always fascinating to me to see how on-campus dining operates at colleges across the country.

Local Food at Colleges
My dad sent me this article from the Chronicle of Higher Education discussing the local food phenomenon within the context of university life. Duke's main foodservice provider, Bon Appetit does make an effort to use local resources for its cooking. However, I wish that it were a campus-wide policy. How has the local-food phenomenon affected your life?

Big Green Purse
This website was brought to my attention via The Laptop Lunch Newsletter (yes, I do have a Laptop Lunch Box--it was great for toting my dinner when I worked at a pharmacy in high school). Anyway, this site is full of useful "green" information; it features eco-friendly tips, products, and books. I definitely added this one to my bookmarks. What sites are on your favorites list?

Now, I am off to prepare a big bowl of chili. He's making cornbread, so I am excited for an afternoon of tasty studying:)

Supersizing, a New Nutrition Calculator,and...Broccoli!

Hello everyone! I thought I would do a quick Show and Tell post today and share some interesting articles that I have been compiling over the past few weeks. Enjoy!

Supersizing at Whole Foods

Sure, we all know that Supersizing at the Golden Arches is not a smart move for your waistline, but could this be true at my beloved Whole Foods as well? Apparently, some of those hot bar treats can be quite caloric. I'm still of the mind that the ingredients are of such good quality that you cannot equate a Whole Foods tofu salad with a McDonald's Big Mac. I'd splurge at Whole Foods over Mickey D's any day. What do you think?
PS The lentil balls on the Whole Foods hot bar are amazing!

Pacific Life Meal Nutrition Calculator
For those of you always on the hunt for a new nutrition calculator, add another one to your list. At first glance, it might seem a bit odd that an insurance company is responsible for this new health tool, but if you think about the long term repercussions of nutrition, it makes perfect sense why Pacific Life would provide the calculator. The database is not as extensive as I would prefer, but it's still pretty nifty.

"Cheating" on a Vegan Diet

I stumbled across this blog post from a Google alert for "vegan," and I was quite intrigued by its message. How strict is too strict when it comes to limiting animal products? I think this is an interesting topic to discuss because food is so central to social gatherings, and sometimes it might just feel inappropriate to bring up one's dietary preferences. This question extends not just to the vegan lifestyle, but any number of diet-based choices: Kosher diets, diets for diabetics, low-carb diets...When should we "just let it slide?"

Giving Broccoli a Second Chance
I obviously need no convincing to eat my broccoli--I was always more than happy to eat my "trees" as a child. However, some might have a bit more difficulty stomaching this superfood. I might try my hand at a version of the Spicy Broccoli Pasta.

That's all for now. I am off to study and tidy the apartment. Ciao!

Show and Tell

I'm back again for a quick post. As promised, I'll share some of the nutrition-related articles I've been reading lately (Google Alerts are a beautiful thing). Anyway, here goes:

-No Moo or Oink
I wish I had seen this list before I left for my trip to Chicago! The Chicago Dining Examiner created a Top 5 List for vegetarian dining in Chicago. I managed to experience one of the five...I hope to try the other four in future trips to the Windy City.

-Even More Label Confusion
Just when you thought you had learned everything there is to know about the nutrition facts label, the food industry throws you a curve ball. In an effort to help consumers make more nutritious choices at the grocery store, food manufacturers are now emblazoning their labels with stamps, stars, and spots. Ironically, the addition of these logos might make grocery shopping even more tedious for some consumers. Take a look at this article to clear up some of the confusion.

-Real Food Challenge
This is an initiative in which my university might participate in the near future. As you all know, food choices can make for big changes, and that's what this challenge is all about--daring colleges around the country to examine their food systems and change them for the better.

Click, read, enjoy. Since this is show and tell, feel free to comment on these articles, or share some links of your own that you've enjoyed.
