Chi-Town Recs

Hello everyone. I have finished my exams--yay!--so now I can focus on my plans for the weekend. We're headed to Chicago this weekend, where we'll have a quick visit with my Nana, plus my parents, Lea, and Ryan will attend a wedding.
So, my question is this: What's your favorite thing to do in Chicago? I've visited Chicago throughout my entire life, so I've already experienced most of the tourist-y attractions. The Chiago Diner is already on the agenda, but other than that, I am open to any and all suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on finishing! You're so lucky you get to go to Chicago -- make sure to take lots of pictures at the diner! Yum, I love that place. I was reading about an organic bakery this morning that sells vegan goodies -- maybe you would want to check that out? (http://thebleedingheartbakery.com/)

Have fun!

Yay Chicago! Well, you definitely need to check out Walker Bros. if you can make it out of the city. Otherwise, there's another great breakfast place called Tempo that has some amazing fruit pancakes. And one of my favorite places which is not a sit-down restaurant but more of a grab-it-and-go is called Hannah's Bretzel. It's all organic, and they have the best.bread.ever!

I think if you Google either of those, their sites should pop up! I hope you have an amazing time - can't wait to hear all about it :o)

Hooray for being done with exams!!!

I'm in Chicago right now!!! :0D If you check out my current blog post, you'll see that I linked to my previous trip to Chicago (from last year), and I blogged all about restaurants, activities, etc.

Take yourself on an architectural walking tour! Chicago has some of the most beautiful architecture in the nation :) My favorite thing to do when visiting new cities is to just walk around various neighborhoods and get a taste of the local history/culture. It should be nice weather for it!

And for a fun, laidback meal, I love Joy Yee's Noodle Shop in Chinatown... the menu is ginormous and everything I've tried has been excellent. They also have a huge selection of yummy tapioca drinks (I recommend the mango-tapioca freeze.) Have fun!!

Yah for finishing the term.
I went to Chicago for a Book Fair and I had the BEST vegan burrito I have ever had in my life. It was on a rather quiet street, close to the beautiful library.

That is all rather vague isn't it?

It was great though.....Enjoy your time in Chicago.

I am so jealous you are finished...I am only about halfway through my Chemistry classes I had to take this summer...not my idea of a good time! Have fun in Chicago!

Ruby: Thanks so much for the link--my mom and I might make a trip to the bakery while my dad and brother in law are at a baseball game. Tasty treats!
Danielle: I will be sure to give a full report of my travels, just like you would!
Jenn: I knew you would have some awesome recommendations. I really want to go to Walker Bros. because one of our friends actually painted a mural there...plus I hear they have some pretty awesome food. Thanks for all your suggestions!
VeggieGirl: Thanks for reminding me of your Chicago posts...maybe I'll see you there!
Kimberly: Great suggestion! That's the kind of traveling I like--exploring to get a taste of the local culture. Oh, and I might have to go get a tapioca drink too!
Tofu Mom: Glad to have you as a reader! Welcome!
Just Me: Thanks!
VeganCowGirl: Books and vegan burritos?! THAT sounds like heaven.
Whitney: Keep on chuggin! Not too much longer:)

this isn't a food recommendation, because last time I was in chicago i wasn't even a vegetarian, but...definitely go to Anthropologie. If you've never heard of the store, check out their website Their chicago location is in this really cute neighborhood and its just an amazing store.
ps. I'm super-jealous that you're going to Chicago Diner. I'm dying to go. I get their cookies from whole foods all the time!

Sara: I was looking for all kinds of recommendations, food-related or not. We have an Anthropologie here, and it's one of my favorite stores! It can be expensive, but I have found some great deals in the sale room. I'll be sure to stop by the Chicago location!

Yay Chicago! (I go to school there, but am away for the summer and missing it dearly)

Two recommendations:
For fun: Go to ImprovOlympics on Friday night for the Improvised Shakespeare Company. It's a blast, trust me--essentially, a 2 hour-show based on a title taken from the audience that tries to mimic Shakespearean themes/language. I'm a nerd, but I love it.

For food: If you have access to a car, head down to Soul Vegetarian (it's really far if you don't have a car, and in a sketchy neighborhood). The place is odd, to say the least, but it has THE best mac and cheeze in the world. And it's super cheap.

Juliana: Yay, another Chicago fan! Where do you go to school?
That ImprovOlympics sounds like so much fun! I don't think I'll make it this trip, but that sounds like my kind of entertainment...I am an English major and have recently cultivated a love of Shakespeare.
I think I have heard of that Soul Vegetarian place..it sounds fantastic. Again, I think I'll have to save it for next time. We have a rental car, but parking is so horrendous that we have just been walking everywhere!
